Kids Bedroom Makeover - One Room Challenge Fall 2022 - Week 1

Updated: Oct 16, 2022

Hi friends and welcome. If you are new here, my name is Ore and I am a wife and mom of 3 kids with age 4, soon to be 6-year-old and soon to be 8-year-old. I previously worked part time as a project analyst when I started my Interior Design Business. But now in my second year of business, I am working on my business full time, loving it and also learning from the challenges entrepreneurship brings.

Let's talk about the One Room Challenge. This is my first time participating and I honestly don't know what to expect but I have seen previous challenges and I am up for it (I hope), and excited that Apartment Therapy will be the media sponsor for this year as well. I decided to makeover our small kid's bedroom in our apartment for the next 8 weeks and also include my kids (also my clients) in the process so that will be fun. I hope you all enjoy this journey with me.

Here is the before of my kid's bedroom and how it looks right now

Here is another angle

As you can see there is a lot going on that needs to be addressed. Specifically, here are the challenges below

- it's an apartment

- small for 3 kids

- not enough room for the kids to play

- organization

- flow

- lighting

- lacking personality

The Solution

I developed the preliminary concept design below to tackle the challenges in this space. First solution which goes with my business branding of a modern colorful and eclectic style, I plan to infuse a lot of color into this space. Hence, I am naming this - Project Rainbow.

I can literally see the finished space in my head already but even the design above might change here and there within the next few weeks but not a whole lot. Besides color, I will be tackling each of the challenges I mentioned above, working within the confines of the apartment and stretching things just a little bit. I plan to open up the space to create more flow for the kids so that it's not so cluttered. I plan to change the ceiling fan to something kids friendly which will also add light and brighten up the room. I will also be creating more manageable organization system because with kids, you have to keep evolving and being innovative to find things that work. Other changes include adding wallpaper from spoonflower, rugs from rugsUSA, paint from Sherwin Williams. All other items for now will be from Amazon to save time.

I am so excited to be a part of this creative community and see us get down and dirty together. Thank you so much for being here and be sure to check back every Wednesday for inspiring updates and transformation on my Facebook and Instagram. Also see what other designers are up to by visiting the One Room Challenge Page.

My name is Ore and I design colorful, modern and eclectic spaces, tailored to your personality and style, helping you stay inspired to love where you live.
